Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) Procedure

Doctor Talking To A Woman

Overview

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may result in a successful pregnancy for persons who are infertile. This form of in vitro fertilization (IVF) is particularly beneficial in cases of male infertility. To aid fertilization, our doctor at the Best IVF Center Mumbai injects sperm into an egg. Pregnancy may occur following an embryo transfer.

What is ICSI?

ICSI stands for intracytoplasmic sperm injection. The method entails retrieving the male’s sperm, selecting the best sperm
from it, and then injecting it into the egg for fertilization. It is one of the most effective artificial therapy options for infertility issues according to our doctors at the best IVF Hospital in Mumbai.

ICSI has a success rate ranging from 80 to 85%. This means that around eight out of 10 eggs will fertilize normally.

Why would I need ICSI?

ICSI aids in the treatment of infertility issues such as:

  • The male partner produces insufficient sperm for
    artificial insemination (intrauterine insemination [IUI])
    or in vitro fertilization (IVF).
  • It is possible that the sperm will not travel normally.
  • The sperm may struggle to connect to the egg.
  • A clog in the male reproductive system may prevent
    sperm from exiting.
  • Traditional methods of fertilization were not used to
    fertilize the eggs.
  • IVF is possible regardless of sperm status.
  • Matured eggs are used in vitro.
  • Eggs that had previously been frozen are being used.

ICSI Procedure in the Best IVF Center in Mumbai

As with traditional IVF, the lady must initially take fertility medicine to promote egg production in the ovaries. During this time, our doctor will keep an eye on the eggs’ progress.

When the egg is ready for retrieval, the ICSI process is carried out.
The steps in an ICSI procedure will go as follows:

1. Retrieval

The man must either create a sperm sample by ejaculating into a cup or the sperm must be surgically extracted. There are numerous methods for retrieving the sperm. The sperm retrieval technique may be conducted sooner in some situations, and the sperm may be frozen.

A small needle and ultrasound probe will be used to extract several eggs from the woman’s ovaries. Although this technique is not painful, it may produce minor bruising and soreness.

2. Sperm is Injected into the Egg

When the sperm sample is collected, it is cleaned and a single sperm is separated. A very fine hollow needle is then used to
inject this into an egg. Because the sperm is injected immediately, it does not have to swim through the cervical fluid. It can take up to 24 hours for a sperm to fertilize an egg and form an embryo.

3. Embryo Monitoring

The fertilized embryos are stored in a laboratory for up to six days. They are being watched for indicators of growth and development during this period. Not all fertilized embryos will be transported to the uterus of the woman. As a result, this phase is critical for selecting the healthiest and most viable embryos.

4. Transferring the Embryo

Once the embryo has reached a specific developmental stage, one or two embryos are chosen and transferred to the woman’s womb via an ultrasound-guided catheter. This could happen two days or five days after fertilization.

One of the most common risks connected with IVF is multiple
pregnancies. Many women choose to have a single egg transferred back to the uterus to avoid this. This is known as eSET (Elective Single Embryo Transfer). In such circumstances, the doctor will wait until the embryo has reached the blastocyst stage before proceeding. If you have additional high-quality embryos, they can be frozen and stored for later use if the IVF cycle fails.

From this stage forward, the procedure is similar to that of a normal pregnancy. The embryo must attach to the uterine walls and continue to develop. Doctors at our IVF center in Mumbai recommend a pregnancy test  two weeks after the fertilized egg has been transferred to the womb.
